Good MP / Bad MP

I have had people tell me that their elected Member of Parliament will not return emails or phone calls that have been made to MP offices. That bothers me a great deal.

Many MP’s are missing a fundamental concept. That concept is that their constituents employ them. We the voters are their bosses. As employers we have the right to expect the courtesy of a response. After all MP's are elected by voters.

I have heard excuses as to why they don’t reply. It’s usually something along the lines that the MP does not actually check the email or calls. A legislative assistant will answer correspondence and phone calls. The legislative assistant will then prioritize the correspondence or phone calls and forward to the MP accordingly. Well Mr., Mrs., or Ms. MP as of today you need to speak to your assistant and explain to him or her that anyone calling or writing about the defoliant (agent orange) spraying at CFB Gagetown is now way up on that priority list.

So here is the deal MP’s! Your good or bad behaviour will be reported here for the world to see. If someone contacts you and you respond then you get a Good MP review. If you don’t bother to respond or you merely send out a "form" letter or response you get a Bad MP review. Sound pretty straightforward?

So MP If there is anything you don’t understand just drop a line. I will reply. I promise.

Mr Bill Blaikie MP NDP

For treating the witnesses at the SCONDVA meeting with dignity and respect. Mr Blaikie stood in the House Of Commons the very next morning to ask Bill Graham Minister of Defence for a public Inquiry!!  Mr Blaikie said the testimony given was "some of the most compelling tesimony he has heard in his 26 1/ 2years as an MP."

Stephen Harper

I’d like to Thank Ms. Sandra Fraas from the Stephen Harper MP Camp, for getting back to me on this important subject. Of course there are no answers, but at least I was acknowledged this time. Many thanks Sandra for the recommendation to phone the Ombudsman and I will surely do that tomorrow morning. I believe Stephen Harper MP’s office should go on the “Good MP” list. Even though Mr. Harper has probably not seen or heard about the letter. At least they attempted to be of help. Unlike so many others.

Hello Mr. Young,

Thank you for your recent e-mail. I'm sorry the party leaders have
been slow to respond to your questions. From our side, as you know,
Conservative Defense critic Gordon O'Connor is taking the lead role
in this issue. Mr. O'Connor has told this office he is formulating a
plan and that more action from the Official Opposition side will be
forthcoming. Thank you for contacting us and please keep us in the
loop.

Hi Everyone
Mr. Stoffer is not alone in his deletion of my email. I took the time to email each MP, all 307 of them, individually.
I did not use a mass mailing. I thought that if I sent a presonal, non-mass mailout, email about the Toxins At CFB Gagetown that it would have a more positive effect.
So far, I have received a total of 53 replies, 22 of them not read and deleted. But there have been 31 who read it. So I might be right, the more personal approach seems to be working. Now mind you, when I get the rest of the replies, it may work out that the deletes win over the reads, but we will have to wait and see just how many read it and how many delete it.
So, here is the list of MP's (or their assistants) who have deleted it so far. Art, you can add these to the BAD MP list.

Subject: Agent Orange
Dear Mr. Trost:
I am writing to ask for your assistance in trying to inform Canadians of the events regarding Agent Orange use at CFB Gagetown in New Brunswick.
There is another side to this story in that the families of the service men stationed at CFB Gagetown were also exposed to the Agent Orange as well.
I was 12 years old in June of 1966 when the Agent Orange was sprayed. My brother was born in August of 1966. He died at the age of 7 years of Reyes Syndrome a disease which has been linked to agent orange. My mother had stomach cancer which caused her to have a gastrectomy performed thereby removing her stomach in 1990.
My father died may 24, 2005 with various medical maladies. Ironic in that he died approximately a week after the media release of the story about agent orange being sprayed at CFB Gagetown. My fathers last few years were lacking in quality of life. I believe his illnesses were related to his contact with chemicals he came into contact with from his 26 year military service.
I have received an information package from Ottawa under the Freedom of Information Act. Much of it has been left blank or merely empty pages marked "Withheld". It makes one wonder what is being hidden. In the package it talks about how the empty barrels of pesticides were merely buried. one 'dumpsite" mentioned was Shirley Road dumpsite. As a child myself and friends would go to Shirley Road to catch tadpoles and eat crab apples.
I have created a website  www.agentorangealert.com if you would like further information about my story. The website is a grassroots level to inform others in my situation.
I read that the CBC has discovered the use of Agent Purple was also used at CFB Gagetown. Agent Purple is apparently even more toxic than Agent Orange.
I thank your for your time and effort.

Peter Milliken Liberal Party Kingston and the Islands
I would have to say that one BAD MP is the Speaker of the House, Peter Milliken, who is also my MP for Kingston. I sent him an email and a letter back in June about the issues of Agent Orange and the other sprayings that were done at CFB Gagetown. That was five months ago and I have yet to hear from him. I have also emailed his office and have spoken with his secretary, yet he continues to ignore me.
I wonder why it is that elected representatives can choose to ignore legitimate concerns by their constituents. I vote Mr Milliken as one very BAD MP.

GOOD MLA- JodyCarr, NB-MLA, Oromocto-Gagetown.. he listens to all points of view and responds pretty much every time he is contacted even to those outside his riding....

GOOD MP- Gary Thompson, Conservative, NewBrunswickSouthwest, NewBrunswick.. No matter what is thrown at him... I have thrown nasty words. He responds and displays compassion

GOOD MP- Stockwell Day, Conservative, Okanagan-Coquihalla, BC.

One email and one response, from himself, that my email was being forwarded to GordonO'Connor, MP and Official Opposition Nationa lDefenceCritic, for his
review and consideration.

GOOD MP - Leo Glavine.. Provincial Liberal .. This man has phoned and emailed and will talk to me at any time displaying compassion for people.. too bad he is Provincial in Nova Scotia and not Federal.

BAD MP - Mr Graham, Minister Of Defence, 3 emails since Jun 22 and all were form letter responses send by his Correspondence Unit, all information in the emails was ignored... These emails did not even include info about AO. They were concerning a 'Military Problem' concerning the treatment our family was recieving as my eldest son was transferred during all our distress of
loosing my husband.. and the funny thing is my son was planning to retire as
soon as his medical stuff was sorted out. So Mr Graham was asked to save the
taxpayer some money and check into the matter. Well by ignoring my emails,
my son was transferred and the base that got him is now trying to find out
why they recieved a man that can not do the task they ask him to do.... A
one armed machinist transferred to instruct new machinists in our
Armed Forces... Sure makes no sense to me... and transferred during the
illness and death of his father... Mr Graham is a cold and cruel man who also
wastes our dollars without concern ...

BAD MP - Martin K, Liberal, Esquimalt-Juan de Fuca, BC, Spoke in circles for the Minister Of Defence in the House of Commons, did not even acknowledge receipt of email

BAD MP - Robert Thibault, Liberal,West Nova, NovaScotia,

My local representative, ... Does not return phone calls or emails

I have sent Mr O'Brien 2 emails. The first on September 1, 2005. The second email I sent on September 12, 2005 asking if he received the first. Still no reply.

I have read that most people who leave a party to sit as an independent usually do not get re-elected. I can see why.

Dave and his excellent staff have treated me with courtesy and respect from the very beginning. The first email I sent Mr. Mackenzie I received a response within minutes. Dave has worked diligently and has questioned the Minister of Defence in the Commons regarding the defoliant spraying at CFB Gagetown. I look forward to working with Dave and his office staff :)  Special thanks to Chandra Pasma for her amazing analytical and research skills.
